Cypress Grove Blues, by Skip James, is played in open D minor tuning. It is a beautiful and haunting twelve bar blues that uses only two chords; D7 and A7. Open D minor is a great tuning to experiment using open strings to create new chord sounds and different textures in the picking such as brushing, damping, and double thumbing. Skip James’ recordings such as “Devil Got My Woman” or “Hard Time Killing Floor” - also in Open D minor - have some of the most beautiful and haunting sounds in blues music.
